Langley Year-end Branch Report August 2021

- submitted by Sue Mackenzie President LRTA

The past year has been a challenge for everyone and our executive has worked hard to find ways to keep connected with our members and get information and special events of interest to them. Zoom, as in all branches, became a familiar process with a bit of a learning curve for many.

We began in September, 2020 at Derby Reach with a “No Bell Picnic” with BYOL - Bring Your Own Lunch and mask and chair! We pre-registered those who wished to attend and signed everyone in and out. In spite of the social distancing requirements, we had a wonderful afternoon with about 30 members attending. We enjoyed it so much, we decided to plan the same event for this September and will hopefully have more members attending. We will be celebrating 35 years as a branch and will welcome new retirees at the same time.

Now that most of our members are fully vaccinated, we feel more comfortable hosting some get-togethers while continuing to follow all of the guidelines and safety precautions. We recognize the new variants can be more challenging and still present a risk, so caution is the way to proceed.

We participated in the BCRTA Zoom AGM and Conference and reported back to our members through our “Open Road” newsletter. We continually forwarded information and articles of interest to all our members from the BCRTA, COSCO and Langley Seniors Advocacy group.

In February, we hosted a Zoom conference, suggested to us by the SRTA, with our guest, David Hutchinson called “Cannabis 101, What’s All the Fuss About” We had good participation as our members became more familiar with the Zoom format and process.

Many of our members also continued to participate in the free technology sessions with Linda Fawcus for Seniors wanting to increase their knowledge of iPhones and iPads.

In April, we hosted a Zoom gardening workshop put on by Port Kells Nursery. They graciously agreed to their first zoom format with our group and we had tremendous feedback. They featured planting a herb garden, a vegetable container garden, hanging baskets and container flower planting. They gave out some prizes to some lucky participants.

We hosted our branch AGM via Zoom on May 18, 2021 and had 38 pre-registered members participate. We gave out $50 gift certificates for Adrian’s at the Airport and Port Kells Nurseries as “door” prizes as a little encouragement to join us. Our current executive all offered to stay on until our next AGM in 2022. We requested nominations through email, newsletters, memos ahead of time, but did not manage to get new volunteers. We are hopeful we will see some new faces at our next AGM.

Our current membership is 514 members, an increase of 28 new members from November, 2020.

We chose to renew our Zoom membership for one more year, although we are hoping to be have some indoor gatherings and meetings during the next year if it is safe for us to do so.

Summer Greetings from Sue Mackenzie (LRTA President)

Spring came and went rather quickly and we had a rather busy mother robin build her nest in the new metal garden hanger I picked up at Port Kells Nursery, not for that purpose. The flowering thyme that I had planted didn’t manage to survive the intrusion, but it was fun to watch.  I didn’t think it wise to water the flowers around the nest!!!

June arrived with some very warm weather and left us in a blistering heat wave, never-before seen.  Schools were closed due to extreme heat for the first time that anyone can remember.  I do hope that

you were all able to stay cool and hydrated during those few extremely hot days. We also had lots of good news regarding the decreasing COVID cases and availability of second vaccinations.  As of July 1st, more restrictions were lifted, and I am hoping that we might be able to get back to more normal in-person gatherings in the Fall.  As I mentioned in my last email, we have reserved Derby Reach Regional Park covered area and fire pit for our “No Bell” picnic. It will be a BYOL “bring you own lunch” event, but we will have a fire for roasting wieners and marshmallows.  It will be on the first day that school goes back in -- September 7, 2021 -- and we will send out more information at the end of July.  We will be asking for pre-registration since the park requires the numbers.

Once again, I would like to thank those members who were able to join us for the LRTA AGM.  As confirmed at the AGM, our LRTA fees will remain at $10 per year.  Our current executive have agreed to stay for one more year, and I would like to thank them, once again, for their support and assistance throughout the past 2 years.

We were able to host several special events this year, despite COVID restrictions, due to the wonder of the Zoom app. In the past, The Brookswood Senior Secondary Jazz band has entertained us at our May luncheons.  And through the advances of technology, the Brookswood Secondary Senior Music Department, under the direction of Mr. Derrick Turi, delighted those of us who attended our Zoom AGM.
