BECOMING A VOULUNTEER TUTOR IN

LANGLEY, SURREY, DELTA

Helping a child learn to read and write or understand how to solve a math problem can be a very rewarding experience!

The Learning Disabilities Association, Fraser South Chapter offers a valuable volunteer opportunity to become a literacy or math tutor to a child aged 7 to 13 in an after-school tutoring program. Adult volunteers work one- to-one with students to develop their literacy and numeracy skills. Your commitment is twice a week for 14 weeks. This is a rewarding, responsible volunteer position, and valuable work experience for anyone considering working with children.

We will provide:

  •   A valuable reference on completion of tutoring
  •   Choiceofdaysandtimes(twotofourhoursperweek)
  •   Tutoring locations in Surrey, Langley & Delta

Training for our next tutoring session begins in September 2016. Volunteer commitment is from October 3 to December 15, 2016, two weeknights per week.

As a Volunteer Literacy or Math Tutor you will work one to one with a child aged 7-14 on

improving reading, writing and comprehension or math skills following a program developed by

LDAFS for children with learning disabilities or difficulties. Adult (18+) tutors work in a classroom

setting with 4-6 other tutors under the supervision of an experienced certified teacher.

Prospective volunteers will choose before training which area they wish to tutor - literacy or

math.

You must attend a personal interview prior to being accepted for training as a volunteer tutor.

Training Accepted tutors must attend all training dates:

Saturdays, September 17, 24, October 1 and Saturday, October 22nd In-service 9 am to 4 pm

Tutoring starts October 3rd, 2016

Qualifications

Excellent oral and written English skills are essential (applicants with strong accents may not be

suitable for this program); Applicants must enjoy reading and sharing their love of books with

children or be comfortable with math and have a desire to instill an interest in math in children

struggling to learn basic math concepts. Applicants must be patient, caring, empathetic,

encouraging, reliable, punctual and dedicated and possess good organizational skills; some

previous teaching or tutoring experience or caring for children is recommended. Some college

or university education is preferable but not essential. Personal interview and police record

check required. Use of own vehicle helpful as location is not on direct bus route.

Duties

Tutors will work one to one with a child to improve their reading, writing or math skills. Each

tutor will be assigned one child per hour and work twice a week either Monday/Wednesday or

Tuesday/Thursday in 2 hour shifts after-school.

The spring program dates are October 3 to December 15, 2016

Choose from three locations:

Surrey Newton: Newton Elementary School, 13359 – 81 Avenue

Langley City: Douglas Park School, 5409 - 206 Street

South Delta: Delta Education Centre, 4750 – 57 Street, Ladner
